Submissions Closing for Poetry & Fiction Jan. 15

Due to a backlog in accepted work and a large backlog in work still needing to be read and reviewed, VQR will be closing submissions temporarily, beginning on January 15, 2010 at 5:00 pm, for poetry and fiction. Submissions currently in our system will be read and replied to, but please give us 2–3 months to work through the backlog of submitted work. We’ve received over 5,000 submissions in the preceding four months and, with a small staff, it’s going to take us some time to read all the work still under review. We appreciate your patience and understanding.

Nonfiction submissions are unaffected; work can still be submitted through the end of May. But please note—we’re receiving a number of submissions that are not a good fit for our editorial mission. If you plan to submit work to us, please read our guidelines and read some of the work we’ve published in recent issues, and note that we rarely publish personal memoir. What we’re most interested in is work that looks out onto the world, rather than work that looks inward toward the personal.
