Bodega Bay
We watched a movie about
an orchestral conductor, a powerful
woman who groomed young musicians.
I didn’t understand the ending.
Driving to the beach, it began to rain.
Red cattle stood slack-jawed on the hill
by the ravine. I like cows, you said.
They’re the most generous animal.
We fought about that for a little.
The difference between giving and being
used. To our left, there was some sort of prayer circle.
The leader wore a hat shaped like a pine cone.
Unobtrusively, the moon rose.
We talked about your other lover on the long
ride home. The rain started up again. Again
I tried to free my mind.
